Date Night Dinners – a gem of a cook book.

Featured

Today I happily report back on my ‘kitchen test’ of  Date Night Dinners – an inspiring recipe book from Sloane Taylor.

“That was the best thing I have tasted for a long time! ” -Sloane-Final-Kindle-Cover-200x300

This was the comment I received after serving up my first meal from this cook book.
I enjoy cooking, especially baking. Love whipping up a celebration cake or a batch of cookies. I also like entertaining, but  what I find a chore, is putting together dishes that compliment each other.
And this is where this book excels.
Every meal comes with accompanying dishes and wine suggestions,
The recipes are simple and delicious with full instructions so anyone can whip up a meal to impress.
I tested the Baked Salmon and served with the suggested side dishes of sweet potato and salad.
The salmon was cooked in a marinade  that was easily whisked up with store cupboard ingredients. Usually I would mash or roast wedges of sweet potato, but never baked them in foil. Simple! But so damn good. Definitely something I will serve up regularly from now on.
This was the quickest meal to put together and the result earned some lovely comments. Just the right dish for all these hot summer evenings.
Another thoughtful touch to this book was the conversion table. Being a ‘metric’ cook I am often put off recipes that use other measurements. So I was delighted to see a chart that has that all sorted.  Cups /ounces /grams all conveniently listed  to suit whatever method you use. Lovely!
If you want to take the chore out of entertaining, I  suggest you get this book and try out some romantic dinners.
Life might never be the same again.

Here is a little more about the lovely creator of  those  Date Night Dinners.

EXCERPT
“This week is for you, Gwen, not me.”

She shook her head as they stepped into the elevator. “It’s for both of us. Just because you’re helping me get my memory back doesn’t mean you should have any less of a vacation.”

If Tucker wasn’t enjoying himself, why would he want to share his life with her? Up until dinner, his complete focus had been on her, but his eyes didn’t shine when he looked at her the way they did when he talked about his conservation efforts.

Just because they were engaged didn’t mean their relationship had been perfect before she’d lost her memory. By paying attention to what he loved, she could strengthen their bond or discover they weren’t right for each other at all.

As the elevator crawled upward, she glanced at him, unable to believe he wasn’t right for her. Not only was she comfortable with him, their chemistry compounded with every passing moment. The real question was if she fit with him, but she didn’t know herself well enough to answer.

The elevator doors opened, and he placed his palm against her back as they exited. A few steps later, they stopped in front of her room. “This is you,” he said.

“Yeah.” Now what? She had no idea how to wrap up the evening and no past experience to fall back on. “Would you like to come in for a cup of coffee?”

He raised an eyebrow. “Is that a euphemism for something else?”

Oh gosh, she might not have a memory, but she understood what she’d implied. She forced a laugh to cover her embarrassment and deflect the sex offer she definitely wasn’t ready for him to take her up on. “Apparently, you’ve gotten engaged to a clichéd and trite woman. I fell asleep so fast earlier I didn’t notice if the room had a coffee pot.”

His lips twitched. “I would never get engaged to a cliché. Don’t sell yourself short.”

She rubbed her temples. If he’d been attracted to something unique and special about her, she’d like a clue what that thing might be. She enjoyed getting reacquainted with him, but getting to know herself proved far more unsettling. “Okay, no coffee and no euphemistic coffee. Uh, good night?”

“A good night kiss?” he suggested.

She dropped her gaze to his full pink lips. How many times had those lips kissed hers before? She wanted to remember, but she couldn’t handle the intimacy of a full, deep kiss when who she was remained elusive.

Rising on her tiptoes, she brushed her lips over his cheek, scratchy with his customary beard stubble. The touch warmed her, inviting her to linger and explore his face. Instead, she pulled away.

My Writing Process Blog Tour

My thanks to  Wendy Metcalfe for  tagging me for the My Writing Process Blogtour.  Wendy  is an author of science fiction,  creative writing tutor and blogger. You can check out here latest publications here.

So here we go with the four required blog questions.

What am I working on?

A contemporary romance where a police sergeant and a super fit cyclist find their passionate attraction seriously compromised by her work and his troubled past. I am about 30,000 words into the story – the stage when the characters begin to take over and mess with your original plotline.

I am also starting edits on my second historical romance Rebellious Cargo  due to be published in March by Musa publishing.  The story takes place in 1803 and follows the stormy relationship between a code breaker and  a naval captain whose frigate is sent to recruit her services for the military. But the last thing Jane Charlesworth wants is to set foot on a naval ship – not after the last time.phone 050

I  really have to get my head down and concentrate during edits, as I find it a very fraught time. So, the oncoming weeks will include a lot of cursing, coffee and cloistering. I usually put on a couple of ‘comfort food’ pounds during this time.  It’s hard graft but the satisfaction of ending up with a well-edited book is amazing.

Q How does your work differ from others of its genre?

Although there is no time travel involved , my  two contemporary novellas  share a Regency link.   I just can’t quite leave the period alone .  A  Regency paperback  features as a plot tool in  The Man in the Blue Flowered Shorts    and a Regency themed ball is the setting for The Man in the Buff Breeches. Both stories are firmly set in the 21st century  and include a fair amount of suspense and humour.

I  always take my heroines out of their comfort zones.

In Only a Hero Will Do, Hetty Avebury  defies convention to escape  a disastrous match arranged  by her  family, but she discovers a whole new set of values  and rules when she finds herself  aboard  a naval ship under the protection of the Physician to the Fleet.

Why do you write what you do?

I am fascinated by the period leading up to and including the Napoleonic wars .

Authors who have inspired me to set my stories in this era  include  Jane Austen  with her astute dialogue and  witty character observations,  and Patrick O’Brian  with  his masterful  Avebury/Maturin series which portray a vivid portrait of life in the Royal Navy and the culture and politics of the period.IMG00094-20120427-1221

I  worked in London  for  few of years and know Bath  quite well,  so Regency architecture and artefacts have always been close by.  If  I need a little more inspiration  I can spend time at Portsmouth’s historic dockyard and wander around Nelson’s flag-ship.  Or maybe take  a stroll around   Jane Austen’s house  at Chawton.

How does your writing process work?

The truth is I need a deadline.  I am much more productive when I am forced to use time efficiently.  I really believe that it is  not how much writing time you have but how well you use it.

I try to  rise early and shoot a few pages off before anyone else gets up.  This is my most creative part of the day, so definitely a morning person.  After 8pm I am virtually brain-dead, so reserve this time for the mundane tasks.

I find a lot of my plot/editing problems solve themselves overnight and I wake up with the answer.  I also dream some really good storylines, but if I don’t jot down new ideas as soon I wake up , after a couple of hours, they have slipped from my memory.

If my story lines dry up, as they frequently do, I load a blank sheet and start writing about anything that comes into my head.  This generally kick starts the work in progress ,and triggers the creative juices.

I do have some unproductive writing days, distracted by  the social media , a sneaky game of Tetris,  or checking  the  Amazon  ratings  to see if my  books  have  miraculously shot up to single figures.  This happened once, in one of those dreams I mentioned earlier. LOL.

I have tagged author  Kadee Mcdonald  to carry on  this blogspot. Kadee is a  Texan whose  love for the Regency period  shines through in her storytelling .  You can read  more about her great stories  over at her website . So over to you Kadee!

nov promo Man in The buff Breeches

How do men in breeches find their way into a contemporary romance?

I like to write contemporary as well as historical stories and  I find one genre keeps sneaking into the other – where it has no business – especially as there is no time travel involved.

I hadn’t immediately planned a sequel to my contemporary novella The Man in The Blue Flowered Shorts but Shona (best friend of Lyn the heroine) simply wouldn’t leave my head. She simply escaped from the pages and ran off on her own to appear in The Man in The Buff Breeches.
As a romance writer, once the happy ever after ending has been achieved, I prefer to leave my couple alone or possibly just make a cameo appearance. But friends and siblings of the central character are, in my opinion, great sequel material. Their characters are there already, alive inside your head, with a ready back story. A great start to plot out a worthy adventure for them.

In The Man with the Blue Flowered Shorts, we have Lyn, a thirty-ish career woman with a passion for reading Regency romance – and her best friend Shona who would gladly nominate the whole period to go into room 101. So as Lyn’s story ended, I found Shona needed a story of her own. And what better place to start then at a Regency themed ball in London.

Googling the subject I was surprised to discover these events are held frequently and worldwide. But do the book inspired heroes in breeches really look quite so sexy in modern day England? And why are these baggy seated, tight legged garments regarded with such romantic overtures?

I try to picture a man in Regency attire clambering out of a lake in 2014. Even if he looked like Darcy he’d still stink of pond weed (at the very best).  And instead of striding purposely out of the water and across the grass he would more likely be cowering with cramp and shivering in the English rain.
But who knows with fashion – the full Regency attire may be on the catwalk next year. Only I don’t know if it will look half as exciting made in machine washable synthetics.

themaninthebuffbreeches-500The Man in The Buff Breeches What is it about men in breeches? Shona finds out her dream man turns out to be not at all what she expected.

When a man in tight buff breeches examines her with his quizzing glass and calls her Miss Bennet, Shona fears the Regency themed ball is going to be as awful as she predicted. But then she is introduced to the gorgeous Nick who ticks every box for her perfect man.

As Shona looks forward to her first date with Nick, her happiness is marred by some disturbing observations around her flat. She doesn’t usually leave her blind rolled down that far, and she never keeps her bunny slippers tidily by the bed. And what is the man in the buff breeches doing lurking on the street outside?

As both men pursue her, Shona finds one makes her body quiver with desire, the other itch with annoyance. Then the men finally confront each other, and her life turns into a nightmare. Can her judgment regarding the male species really be so seriously flawed?

“Guess again.” Daniel’s dark eyes bored into her. “My dear, if I wanted to be with someone famous I wouldn’t have to wait for them to die…nor would it be you.”

Well, he doesn’t have to be so persnickety and openly sneer at the thought of doing me! He might be good looking, but it isn’t like he’s God’s gift to women. And he’s old. He must be at least forty-five. “So what are you doing here?”

Wait a minute—did he read my mind?

He sighed and shook his head. “I promised a friend I’d help you understand what has happened to you. And yes, I can read your thoughts.”

Freaky. A mind reader, but he knows what’s going on with my situation.

Excitement suppressed her doubts. Finally, she was going to find out what happened. Perhaps she had some rare strange disease that only a few people knew about.

He studied her for a long moment with his intense black eyes, and she had to resist the urge to squirm. Maybe she didn’t want to know what he was going to tell her.

“Your condition is the result of…an accident. My friend didn’t mean to get carried away and turn you into one of the living dead.”

“The what?” How did she manage to get hooked up with these weirdoes? “Are you frigging nuts?”

His dark glare stopped her from saying more.

“For your information, I’m saner than you’re going to feel shortly.” He held up a hand to stop her question. “Let me finish before you start with your questions.” His voice teetered on boredom as he went on to explain what happened to her on Halloween night.

The story may have bored him, but by the time he completed his tale, she was boiling mad. “You’re telling me I’m a vampire.”

This man was certifiable. Vampires only existed in horror movies and at costume parties. “Then what does that make you, if you’re friends with this individual who took a bite out of me?”

“A much older and wiser vampire than you or my young friend who created you.” He adjusted the collar of his coat. “Now, do you want to benefit from some of my knowledge or do you wish to continue with your delusion that I’m insane?”

A little flick of fear ran down Deb’s spine. What if he was telling her the truth? What if she had been turned into a vampire? That would explain why the doctor pronounced her dead. She was, what did Daniel call it…one of the living dead.

“So, did your friend or whatever you call him, need virgin’s blood to survive, or what?”

The Experienced One grimaced. “I call him Aaron, or sometimes refer to him as my protégé, and yes, he is my friend. As for the virgin’s blood, if that was the case he’d be in real trouble on the survival issue with his selection of you, wouldn’t he?”

Lizzie T. Leaf loved books since she opened her first one. Her dream was to write them herself. Lost in the hectic day to day world of family, job, laundry and housework, writing became a distant memory. When the twinkling ember did spark, it was usually doused by someone demanding their share of her time.

Lizzie’s life went full circle. The desire to put the stories that continued to play in her head on paper emerged stronger than ever, and at a time when there was someone who encouraged. Now she lives her dream.

Lose it ! Love it ! Sam Cheever spills the beans on ‘The Biggest Poser’

Today I welcome multi published, romance author Sam Cheever to my blog. Her latest  release, The Biggest Poser, set against the  backdrop of a  TV  reality show, promises some competitive action.

Over to you Sam …

Making Your Own Powerthebiggestposer-100

The heroine of my newest release, The Biggest Poser, is a young woman of color who’s worked her way up to become a popular trainer for the Lose it! television show. Jillie is smart, fun-loving and determined to excel in an industry that tests a person’s strength of character with every moment before the camera. Jillie isn’t perfect. She has her own personal demons—a well-chewed fingernail is proof of that—but she’s worked hard to achieve what she has and will fight to keep it.

In short, Jillie makes her own power. Nobody gave her a top spot on a popular television show. Jillie earned that top spot. I love her for that. She’s an everyday hero in a world woefully short on heroes. Jillie isn’t sitting back waiting for her big break, she’s out there fighting every day for it. And when her spot is challenged by a nasty piece of work trainer named Deva Banks, Jillie doesn’t succumb to nasty tactics to beat the other woman. Instead, she doubles down on her efforts to beat the devilish Deva fair and square. In the book the trainers are fighting to win or keep the top spot on the Lose it! show. But in real life the goal isn’t all about winning, it’s about staying true to yourself and using every obstacle, every challenge to create internal power that will help you weather all of life’s little setbacks. That’s what real power is…the capacity to thrive so that you can make the world around you better.

Jillie’s my inspiration. And I hope to be like her someday. When I grow up. #:0)

BLURB

For the contestants, the race is on to lose the most weight and win everything. For the staff of the popular weight loss show, the clock is ticking to the culmination of their lies and the possibility of losing it all.

Will the Biggest Poser win? Or will the lies just grow and grow until they sink the whole show? Only one thing is certain. Whatever happens, it’s gonna be an entertaining ride!

EXCERPT

They sat in silence for a few more minutes, only the sound of water moving around Jillie’s gently circling legs disturbing the quiet.

Suddenly, Jillie pushed herself to her feet and stripped off her sexy short shorts.

Brandt looked up, catching his breath at the sight of her standing there in a teeny tiny black bikini. “You’re going swimming?”

“I have to do my nightly laps.”

“After the day you’ve had?”

“Especially after the day I’ve had. Routine soothes me. Besides, maybe I can ward off some of the soreness I’m probably gonna have after the mess I made of that run today.”

Jillie moved to the deep end of the pool, climbed up onto the diving board, and prepared herself. She stood on the very end of the board, her hands down by her sides and her eyes closed, as if psyching herself up for the dive.

Brandt pulled a leg from the water and bent it, leaning on it as he settled in to watch what he figured would be a spectacular dive. He wrapped himself up in the pleasure of watching her, smiling with the sheer joy of it.

After a moment of contemplation, Jillie opened her eyes, swung her arms up, flattened her palms together, and bent slightly at the knees. With a powerful push of her long legs, she flew up and out, her body taking a taut bend in the middle and starting into the expected dive. But at the last moment she tucked her knees and, grinning widely, hit the water in a truly spectacular cannon ball.

A good portion of the pool’s water spewed out onto an unsuspecting Brandt and he shrieked, scrambling to his feet and jumping back.

But it was far too late. His tidy golf shirt and carefully creased khaki shorts were drenched, and water dripped from his hair and down his chin.

Jillie’s head popped to the surface and she was laughing. She treaded water as he reached to pull the drenched shirt off over his head.

“You’re gonna pay for that, Ms. Maxwell.”

She didn’t look at all worried. “I don’t think you have it in you, Mr. Parkerson.”

“We’ll just see about that.” He took a running start and leapt off the side, landing on his butt in the water with a resounding smack that swamped her with water.

Jillie shrieked and disappeared under the resulting tsunami. Brandt reached for her and pulled her free of the water before she drowned. She was laughing hysterically as he pulled her out.

He snickered with her, groaning in pain.

“That sounded like it hurt,” she said.

“You have no idea. But it was totally worth it.” Brandt had hold of her arms as they both treaded water and he dragged her close.

He’d only intended to share some fun with her. Create a playful moment in reaction to her mischievous salvo. But as soon as her velvet soft, warm body pressed against his, his bare chest smashed warmly against her nearly naked breasts, Brandt forgot his good intentions and dragged her in for a kiss.

Jillie gasped against his lips, the heat of her body a sharp counterpoint to the cold of the water.

Fire and ice.

Brandt slipped an arm around her slim waist and pressed her close with a hand in the small of her back. He slipped his fingers inside the top edge of her teeny bikini bottoms.

Jillie opened her soft mouth and he captured her sigh of submission, savoring her sweet, spicy taste. She lifted her hands and slipped them over his jaw line, holding him in the kiss as her soft tongue tangled with his.

Her thighs bumped against his as they both treaded water and her rigid nipples scraped his chest.

Brandt’s body molded to her like clay warmed in the hot sun. He slipped his fingertips inside the bottom edge of her suit and groaned as he found warm, velvety skin beneath his fingertips. Arching his hips, he pressed himself into her soft belly.

He’d never before felt the kind of attraction the woman in his arms instantly inspired in him. When they were together, Brandt felt as if they’d known each other for a lifetime instead of a few weeks.

She groaned against his mouth and wrapped her long legs around his waist.

Brandt cupped her delicate chin with his hand and tipped her head, pulling his lips from hers. “God, Jillie. You make me crazy.”

Her tongue came out and swept his lower lip, tasting him. “Really?” Her lips quivered. “I guess you’re okay, but I can definitely take you or leave you.” She shrugged.

He laughed. “Liar.”

What is it about men in breeches?

Can her judgement regarding the male species   really be so seriously flawed? Click here for excerpt

When Lyn Redford’s sandal hurtles across the deck of the cruise ship, it makes her first introduction to Henry Matasie rather hostile. It wasn’t just that the man was seriously grumpy; he was a walking wardrobe disaster. Do you really need to wear woollen socks with your shorts in the Caribbean heat?

Following an embarrassing encounter in the cocktail bar with Henry, Lyn and her travelling companion Shona try to find out the reason for his strange behaviour. Later, when Lyn accidentally reads his e-mail, she is convinced the man in the blue flowered shorts is deadly dangerous.

When Henry swaps his awful holiday clothes for a dress suit to attend the gala dinner the transformation sets Lyn’s pulse racing. But she is convinced he still hides a guilty secret and she is intent on discovering what it is
